From Bankruptcy to Beachfront: My Midlife Reinvention in Puerto Vallarta

From Bankruptcy to Beachfront: My Midlife Reinvention in Puerto Vallarta

🔥There was a moment—between locking the doors of my once-thriving business and packing my life into a few suitcases—when I realized: This isn’t a breakdown. It’s a breakthrough.

Like so many others, the pandemic hit me hard. In Canada, I was one of hundreds of thousands whose businesses and lives were irrevocably changed.

There was no government help. No end in sight to the Ontario lockdowns. My yoga studio, my career, and the life I had spent decades building unraveled.

My husband Ian, looked at me and said, “What the f&ck are we doing? We can’t keep living like this.”

And he was right.

💥That one conversation changed everything.

We decided to fast-track our dream of living abroad.

Within a week, we listed our property, began selling almost everything we owned—including my 3,000-book library (that one hurt), and booking plane tickets to Puerto Vallarta.

We were in our late 40s.

💥Bankruptcy. Reinvention. Selling it all. Starting from scratch in a foreign country was not exactly on our midlife vision board.

But the moment we took our power back, everything shifted. It wasn’t just survival—it was sovereignty. It felt like liberation.

In October of 2021, Ian, our cat Bob, and I moved to Bucerías, Nayarit—just north of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

And while I was excited for a new chapter, I was also quietly grieving.

😢Grieving the identity I lost. The life I left. The version of me I no longer was.

I felt adrift—trying to navigate a new culture, new language, and new life—all while wondering who I was becoming.

Reinvention is beautiful. But let’s be honest—it’s also brutal.

That’s why I understand the fears, resistance, and overwhelm that can come with a move like this.

Because I lived it.

🙂Eventually, I found my sea legs. I found joy again. Friendships. Opportunities. And a deeper sense of peace than I had known in years.

So why am I sharing this with you?
