Let’s rip off the Band-Aid, shall we?
If we were sipping mezcal on the beach, and you asked me, “Shasta, what do I *really* need to know about moving to Puerto Vallarta or buying real estate in Mexico?” — and I wasn’t worried about sounding too blunt — here’s what I’d tell you:
💡 5 Hard Truths About Moving to PV
1. 🧚🏼♀️It’s not all unicorns and roses.
Yes, it’s paradise — but paradise comes with mosquitos, bureaucracy, and the occasional power outage. If you’re expecting Mexico to be a budget-friendly, stress-free version of your U.S. life, prepare for a wake-up call. And possibly a lizard in your shower. (It happened to me this past week! Pinche gecko!)
2. 🆘“I’ll figure it out when I get there” is not a plan.
Don’t wing it. Don’t come without at least some clarity on visas, rentals, real estate and finances. Mexico rewards the prepared — and eats the naive for breakfast.
3. 🌮Culture shock is real, even if you love tacos.
There will be things that frustrate you. Things that confuse you. Things that make you cry in a grocery store aisle. That doesn’t mean you don’t belong here. It means you’re human.
4. 😲Facebook groups are not the gospel.
Karen from Ohio does not know immigration law, even if she answers every post. Get your advice from professionals — not strangers with strong opinions and a lot of free time.
5. 🔥You still bring you with you.
Moving won’t magically fix your life. It can be the catalyst for an incredible reinvention — but you’ll need to do the work. You can’t outrun yourself, even with ocean views.
If you’re still reading, you’re my kind of person — brave, bold, and maybe a little done with the B.S.
